History of The Arc Since our inception, we have worked closely with families in the community. The Arc of East Central Iowa started in 1953 when families came together to gain services for their children who were affected by what they called “mental retardation” and is now referred to as intellectual and related disabilities.
The Arc of East Central Iowa founders began by canvassing neighborhoods to learn how to address the needs and concerns of people with disabilities. Now, more than half a century later, we offer a variety of programs and services that help enhance the lives of people with intellectual and related disabilities.
