About Us

The Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association (HADSA) was founded in September 1999 by Troy and Michelle McCarthy, parents of a son with Down syndrome, who had a goal to meet other similar families. This goal turned into not only meeting families, but supporting them in their journey. The organization became a non-profit corporation and a 501c3 in December of 2003.

A group of people, including children and adults, gathered outdoors for a walk event supporting Down syndrome awareness. They are holding a large banner that reads "HADSA'S WAK FOR DOWN SYNDROME." Some people are sitting on the grass, and there are tents and trees in the background.
A young girl with glasses, light brown hair tied into pigtails, is sitting at the bottom of a blue slide at a playground. She is wearing a gray T-shirt with yellow and blue text and pink shorts. The girl appears to be tired or resting after sliding.

Driven by passion

HADSA organizes several annual events including the HADSA’s Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk, holiday party, educational seminars, social outings, and much more!

The current membership consists of families, professionals, and supporters of children and adults with Down syndrome. Membership fees are not assessed; therefore, the group relies on personal and business contributions, and other fundraisers as needed.

The operational costs consist of administrative costs, educational seminars, advertising and activities for the Walk, scholarships, and yearly activities and a holiday party for members and their families.
