The Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association (HADSA) was founded in September 1999 by Troy and Michelle McCarthy, parents of a son with Down syndrome, who had a goal to meet other similar families. This goal turned into not only meeting families, but supporting them in their journey. The organization became a non-profit corporation and a 501c3 in December of 2003.
The current membership consists of families, professionals, and supporters of children and adults with Down syndrome. Membership fees are not assessed; therefore, the group relies on personal and business contributions, and other fundraisers as needed.
HADSA organizes several annual events including the HADSA’s Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk, holiday party, educational seminars, social outings, and much more!
The operational costs consist of administrative costs, educational seminars, advertising and activities for the Walk, scholarships, and yearly activities and holiday party for members, families, and supporters.
Our group holds an annual member meeting in December.
