2015 Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk

We did it!  We exceeded our goals for the HADSA’s Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk.

First of all THANK YOU to all who supported the Walk in any way. We had over 1,000 people attend this year’s event including over 900 walkers and close to 200 volunteers! We raised over $43,000 with corporate sponsors, team donations and raffle proceeds. We expect the amount raised to increase as we are waiting for more matching funds to arrive. Please, remember to reach out to your employer for those matching dollars! Many employers will donate to the level you do for local Non-Profits. We can help with information and filling out forms if needed.

The event was inspiring and there was something special about the energy that day.  The weather was beautiful and I think the sun seem to radiate a feeling of celebration. One of our goals was to bring awareness of the many gifts we all feel that people with Down syndrome bring to our community, and I really think that happened.  Walking the route with people cheering along our guests of honor, going through Czech Village during CzechFest, and looking out over 1,000 people there with a common bond gave me an amazing feeling that was indescribable.

Volunteers made the event run smoothly and helped in making us all feel special. I want to thank all the volunteers and especially my sister, Cindy Lee, who chaired the Walk this year.  She, along with her committee, spent hours making it a great day for so many people. THANK YOU, CINDY, JODY, AND KAY

The walk proceeds support our operating budget and will allow us to continue our mission of advocating, educating and supporting our members.  We also split the raffle proceeds with GiGi’s Playhouse and donated money to support their literacy tutoring program for 10 students. Further details of how the money will be used can be found on our web site.

Believe it or not, we have already started to plan for the 2016 Walk! And, we hope you will help! Save the date for September 25, 2016. You can volunteer to serve on a committee or the Board, or you can be thinking about corporate sponsors with whom you already have a connection, or solicit raffle items that can be donated. While we have gotten a few responses already, we hope EVERYONE will fill out the survey that was sent out last week asking for feedback on the Walk.  It is VERY IMPORTANT to us that we hear from all of our members as we know you have good ideas!  Please help by taking the survey! We feel your energy and we want to serve your family and our community at-large.  The more you get involved, in whatever way you can, the more you will feel connected and supported.

Thanks again for making the 2015 Walk a day to remember.  Thank you for helping to live our motto “Be Inspired, and Get Involved”!
