History

The Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association (HADSA) was founded in September 1999 by Troy and Michelle McCarthy, parents of a son with Down syndrome, who had a goal to meet other families. This goal turned into not only meeting families but supporting them in their journey. The organization became a non-profit corporation and a 501c3 in December of 2003.

The current membership consists of families, professionals, and supporters of children and adults with Down syndrome. Membership fees are not assessed; therefore, the group relies on personal and business contributions, and fundraisers as needed.

HADSA organizes several annual events including the HADSA’s Step Up For Down Syndrome Walk, holiday parties, educational workshops, social outings, and much more.

The operational costs of the group consists of administrative costs, education seminars, advertising and activities for the Walk, scholarships, and yearly activities and holiday parties for members, families, and supporters. Our group holds an annual member meeting in December of each year.
